Intercom vs Zendesk 2026: Pricing, Plans and Key Differences
Compare Intercom and Zendesk for SaaS support, including Fin outcome billing, automated resolutions, SLA tiers and specialist routing.
Verified
Choose Intercom if support happens inside your product and you want Messenger, a shared inbox and Fin operating together. Choose Zendesk if your purchase centers on a ticket operation spanning email, messaging and voice, with structured routing and escalation requirements. The useful comparison is the plan supporting your service promise plus its usage bill, rather than the lowest advertised seat.

Match the purchase to the support operation
For a SaaS company helping signed-in users navigate a product, Intercom Essential brings in-app chat and a public help center together. Once billing questions and technical requests need different team queues, the relevant plan becomes Advanced. The plan documentation separates those automation features from Expert's SLAs. An Advanced subscription does not buy a contractual response-time workflow simply because it includes Workflows.
A service desk combining phone, asynchronous messages and email should compare Zendesk Suite, rather than treating its email-only entry as equivalent. For ten agents needing SLAs and skills routing, Zendesk Suite Professional is $1,150/month at annual rates and Intercom Expert is $1,320. These calculations exclude AI consumption and channel usage. Intercom charges separately for channels including Phone, SMS and WhatsApp; Zendesk also has consumption-based voice and other extras.
AI bills require different denominators. Intercom's outcome definition includes explicit or inferred resolution and a completed Procedure, including handoffs. Zendesk defines an automated resolution around successful AI resolution without human escalation. Multiplying both vendors' rates by the same count of closed tickets would conceal that difference. Budget seats, billable AI events and messaging or voice separately; compare a sample of real support scenarios against each vendor's counting rules.
Routing also deserves a specific demonstration. Intercom's skills routing requires Balanced assignment and falls back to the least-loaded available agent when no matching specialist is available. A team requiring a ticket to wait for a qualified specialist must assess that behavior. Zendesk's SLA rules additionally distinguish customer deadlines from Enterprise group ownership targets.
Buyer questions
Must we replace our helpdesk to buy Fin?
No. Intercom also sells Fin for an existing helpdesk without seat charges; that offer has its own monthly outcome commitment.
Does Intercom Advanced include SLAs?
No. Expert is the documented SLA tier. Advanced covers workflows, multiple team inboxes and round-robin assignment.
